The Assignment: We are exploring COLORISM America as well as human nature. First, my students identified some American cultural perspectives involving appearance/beauty. Next, we analyzed the Zora Neal Hurston’s play, “Color Struck”. Finally, we studied the Spike Lee’s film School Daze. After viewing the School Daze, my students were to write a short essay expressing their views on the subject. The goal was to argue how the movie and/or play does or does not represent some common assumptions people have about human nature.

The Assignment: We are exploring Africa after the end of the Cold War. First, my students reviewed the historical reasons for the Cold War and the interest superpowers (and imperialistic nations) had in Africa’s natural resources. Next, we examined the independence many African nations gained during the Cold War and the side effects of hundreds of years of colonialism.We also studied misconceptions many people have of Africa and Africans. Last, we studied the film Blood Diamond. I wanted my students to get an understanding of the conflicts that have plagued some African regions in the recent past. The goal was to argue how the movie does or does not represent some common assumptions people have about human nature as it applies to African independence.
